Leading Digital Transformation
As the CTO of SugarCreek, my daily responsibilities revolve around managing the technical backbone of our seven U.S.-based manufacturing plants. Our team manages various systems, including computers, printers and network connectivity.
I lead the company’s SAP project, focusing on people management and ensuring the smooth functioning of all technical systems.
Enhancing Decision-Making through Real-Time Visibility
A crucial aspect of our operations is the shift to a real-time environment where decisions are made instantly. This is particularly vital in the food industry, where a just-in-time approach is often essential for minimizing waste and avoiding spoilage.
We handle a wide range of perishable items, including pork bellies and large quantities of bacon, where short shelf life necessitates prompt packaging and swift shipment. Just-in-time delivery shrinks the storage duration and ensures the timely fulfillment of customer demand.
Technology plays a vital role in responsiveness. The ability to utilize real-time data helps navigate the complexities of modern food manufacturing and ensures transparency from raw material sourcing to finished product delivery.
Data-Driven Efficiency
Adoption of technology becomes essential for practicality. We rely on ERP systems for tracking and traceability. We use RF screens for multiple processes, from scanning raw materials off trucks to monitoring movement across the facility and through shipping. Every step is data captured to simplify operations and swiftly address issues.
Technology plays a vital role in responsiveness. The ability to utilize real-time data helps navigate the complexities of modern food manufacturing and ensures transparency from raw material sourcing to finished product delivery
By implementing SAP and supporting a data warehouse, we aim to centralize user-friendly formats. The extracted information from SAP gives our teams access and authorization to analyze relevant data. AI is not central to our operations, but it plays a role in optimizing specific decisions within the supply chain. By analyzing market trends, AI provides remarkable input for our bacon production with smart buying decisions. For example, AI helps determine the best time to freeze the inventory when prices are low and sell during demand.
Shaping the Future with AI and ML
AI and ML will transform the food industry, improving equipment efficiency, speeding up order scheduling and optimizing ingredient usage.
With data being collected from ERP systems and machines on the plant floor, AI will be essential in interpreting the massive volume of information. In the future, AI will play a central role in driving sustainable and scalable operations.
Word of Advice to Emerging Leaders
A realistic, outcome-driven approach to AI implementation is necessary. As profit margins are narrow in the food industry, implementing AI just because it is popular without a realistic goal is obstructive.
To remain competitive, organizations should foster a culture of constant learning, embrace innovations and explore emerging technologies. The transition from older programming languages like COBOL took 50 years. However, changes since then have been rapid.
The future is approaching faster than ever, and we must be prepared to meet it with agility and foresight.
