Smartiply has been recognized by CIO Applications Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top 50 IoT Companies - 2018,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry, and is also named among “,” reflecting its broader leadership. This profile has been developed by the CIO Applications research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Kaushik Pillalamarri, Co-Founder & CEO.
Can you trace the factors that spurred the conception of Smartiply Inc and give a quick snapshot of the journey and its evolution over the years?
Headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Smartiply was established in the year 2015, to eradicate the barriers of IoT adoption globally.
Prior to founding Smartiply, the initial idea of the two reputed scientists Dr. Mung Chiang, Dean of Purdue Engineering, and Dr. Junshan Zhang, Chair Professor at Arizona State University (ASU), was to share bandwidth between two smartphones and provide an uninterrupted video streaming experience. We were primarily working on a mobile platform until a large enterprise IoT companies, approached us to help them solve a major predicament. The company was finding it challenging to stream live surveillance video and monitor locations effectively due to inadequate connectivity and unexpected downtime.
To address these challenges, we developed the Smartiply Fog computing platform. Smartiply derives its name from smartdevices multiplying their capability to create a multiplier effect. Our groundbreaking platform can be ported to any device. The moment Smartiply is implemented in the device it is regarded as fog computing-enabled. We have commercially deployed nearly 800 IoT gateway devices across 700 enterprise locations enabling uninterrupted video and sensor data transmission and embedded intelligence while improving operational efficiency and lowering TCO.
Our IoT gateway allows users to combine other bandwidth resources available within proximity and provide reliable, boosted, and secured connectivity. This allows the video and sensor feeds to be transferred to the cloud uninterrupted.
As our gateway is more intelligent than a router, it is able to intercept the data that goes through the router and perform analytics where the data is analyzed locally and if there is suspicious behavior, it notifies the operator.
Our platform also delivers IoT solutions that enable optimal use of network and cloud resources, seamlessly integrates into legacy infrastructure, and eliminates barriers to IoT adoption globally. Smartiply is designed in such a way that it can cater to any industry because we have built a modular and expandable gateway. It is built such that based on the use case a user can add or remove components to make it as comprehensive, as fully-featured or inexpensive as desired.
We have also commercially deployed our gateway into mobile solutions. The mobile platform allows smartphones to detect other smartphones in proximity and creates a fog network.
we developed the Smartiply IoT Platform, which solves connectivity issues universally by combining multiple channels of bandwidth from multiple operators
What are some of the unique challenges that you have witnessed around the IoTlandscape? What unique disruptions do you bring to the table to help your clients mitigate said challenges?
There is a plethora of IoT-based applications developed every year. According to research, nearly 92 percent of IoT workload is on the cloud. The rapid adoption of mobile internet and IoT applications brings with it severe challenges such as high cost of implementation, insufficient bandwidth, periodic outages, cloud latency, data transit risk, and data loss. In addition, the heavy reliance on cloud-based computing is not only putting more pressure on the network, but also placing more pressure on the cloud. For instance, if a user wants to send a video feed about a malicious activity to the cloud for analysis, and if the connectivity is bad, it will be too late to prevent any timely local response.
To overcome these shortcomings, we developed the Smartiply IoT Platform, which solves connectivity issues universally by combining multiple channels of bandwidth from multiple operators. We also provide embedded intelligence through edgecomputing to improve decision-making time, reduce risks, and decrease total data cost. Our IoT platform leverages network, computing, and storage resources to deliver high availability, better performance, tighter security, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Can you share details of the firm’s plans pertaining to new solutions and technologies that could play a role in the company’s offerings in the near future?
We have begun creating strategic partnerships with device manufacturers, systems integrators, and application developers to help deliver complete solutions to enterprises and industrial establishments. As a customer-driven company, our products have been built with direct input and participation from our customers. We have dedicated engineers to continuously add capabilities based on customer feedback, making our products a tight fit with market requirements. We support our customer’s business development activities by participating with them on pilots and POCs in the field. Our dedicated production support team responds to operational issues in the field 24/7. Further, we have an exceptionally close strategic partnership with our device manufacturer, Wistron, to address any hardware issues.
Our vision is to enable IOT for the entire world through our modular, extensible, and affordable platform across all industries. The Fog computing paradigm is gaining traction as more and more companies are educated about its benefits. Smartiply is looking forward to expanding its footprint in India where we first developed the product to be used in adverse conditions from the perspective of infrastructure availability and reliability, harsh climate conditions, and economic disadvantage. Africa, Sri Lanka, Mexico and the Carribean are next, where we are leveraging the knowledge and experience gained in India and the U.S. We are on the verge of moving into the enterprise mobility space as well, utilizing our platform to bring secure collaboration and resource sharing capabilities into play at the workgroup level.
