Why Video Quality is a Necessity for Live Streaming

Viewer's focus has shifted from latency to video quality in the live sports streaming space.

FREMONT, CA: Advanced technologies have high-level live sport streaming significantly recently. With the development of the media industry, live streaming of sporting occasions has now attained superiority over the conventional modes of the telecast. Traditionally, the factor of latency has been the most essential in sport streaming because it is assumed that fans value streams that are as real-time as feasible. However, the element of streaming video quality might now be stealing the spotlight.

Reports published by Verizon Media emits light on shifting viewership trends, which value video quality above latency. According to the carried out surveys, only 42% tagged minimum latency as remarkably necessary. On the other hand, around 64% of the respondents think that high-quality pictures are essential. The same survey also finds the price factor also scores over latency. Thus, the report difficulties the conventional beliefs of streaming services that the least latency is the most valued aspect of live sport streams.

In light of the report, sport streaming organizations should now look to realign their preferences. Although surprising, the outcomes highlight the value that viewers now give to video quality. In today's digital ecosystem, viewing expertise seems to have dominated a few seconds of lag. Besides, viewers also have access to the newest display technologies, comprising 4K. A 4K display will show outcomes only when streaming video quality is of big standards. Now, the prices of devices with 4K displays have also come down significantly. These improvements seem to have contributed to making latency less powerful than video quality in live sports streaming.

For media organizations involved in sports streaming, now is the time to evolve technological aids and expand capabilities that allow the highest quality video streams. In addition to video quality, cost-effective subscription models should also be a necessity. Although latency might not remain the prime concern anymore, in the age of 5G, it will stay a significant differentiator.
