Smart grid service providers are exploring numerous utility business possibilities by implementing artificial intelligence.

FREMONT, CA: A smart grid operates in various practical ways to analyze supply-demand constraints. On comparing the digital-age smart grids with traditional grid systems, it becomes apparent that the latest grid systems offer better distribution, enable integration of clean energy and allow quick restoration in situations like power blackouts. The smart grid systems are interconnected by several sensors attached to various utility equipment, which allow the intelligent grids to provide seamless energy services. As a result of the interconnections, smart utility devices generate massive amounts of operational data that contribute to the making AI advantageous.

With the ability to access and process vast amounts of accumulated data, AI contributes by sorting unstructured data for further in-depth analysis. The deployment of AI-based services makes it possible to utilize the utility data generated even in remote places and improve the overall performance of the smart grid systems. Integrated Asset Management System (AMS) is one of the most popular applications of AI. AMS allows sharing of the asset information across the organization. It also brings significant impacts by reducing maintenance and operational costs for the utility sector.

Recently, distributed energy systems and renewable sources of energy have also gained popularity with the help of AI. Powered by artificial intelligence, various energy companies are being able to meet the growing demands for energy. Combining the power of other technologies like cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence can develop active management systems for the smart grids and successfully enhance the accessibility of renewable energy sources.

Further, AI can also increase the efficiency of the smart utility grids and allow end-users to track their energy usage to avoid energy theft. Implementing AI into the grid network can help analyze data generated by various grid components and assist users in optimizing energy usage. Hence, AI is considered the most revolutionary technology for clean and green energy providers.
