The Key Advantages and Disadvantages of Indoor Positioning System

Indoor navigation has become even more convenient with an indoor positioning system as users do not need to type in their current location when going from point A to point B.
FREMONT, CA: An indoor positioning system helps people locate objects or people inside a building. An indoor navigating solution is sometimes combined with an indoor position system (IPS) as it opens the door to many possibilities. However, like any other thing, it comes with both advantages and disadvantages. In today’s article, we are going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of an indoor positioning system.
Advantages
Location-based Marketing
The combination of indoor positioning and indoor navigation also offers people the benefits of location-based marketing. This allows one to create a more customized experience. It also empowers them to start a business from their investments. By providing sponsors, exhibitors, or partners with the option of purchasing marketing opportunities through push notifications, one can make their venue more attractive and interesting to potentially increase ROI.
Easy to Operate
Indoor navigation has become even more convenient with an indoor positioning system as users do not need to type in their current location when going from point A to point B. Similarly, they do not need to worry about turns or counting doors since they can continuously track their real-time position on the map as they move through the building.
Disadvantage
Choosing the Right Provider
Indoor positioning is quite expensive, so it is important to find the right provider that can meet their requirements. Everything depends on how accurate one needs its positioning to be. For instance, in order to guide travelers around an airport, one does not need the same accuracy as compared to guiding people in a library. One also needs to think about power consumption or if one needs any extra features like analytics, offline positioning, and more.
Maintenance
Another disadvantage of an indoor positioning system is maintenance. The beacons do not need other maintenance than a new battery once in a while, and the best BLE beacons work nearly five to eight years before their batteries need to be changed. Furthermore, if one has 500 beacons, changing the batteries may take a longer time.
