Researchers at Stevens Institute of technology have claimed that smart-car technologies save drivers $6.2B on fuel costs each year. According to the researchers, time-mapping, route optimization, and lane-keeping warnings of the smart cars help to save in billions.
Researchers from the Stevens conducted a review of the literature on the energy and safety review of features extracting data on how the technologies impact on fuel consumption. These data have been analyzed to understand the benefits and costs associated with the technologies. Researchers classified the technologies into three categories:
Control system: Cruise control, collision detection and active braking, and cooperative adaptive cruise control.
Information systems: Dynamic route guidance and parking aid system
Warning systems: Blind spots, forward collision, speed limit, lane departure, and traffic warning.
Economic, health and ecological benefits: Traffic and travel have become a hectic part for the drivers, and people have difficulties in tracking moving objects near their vehicles. Smart car technologies efficiently help to monitor and navigate many challenges faced by the drivers as traffic congestion, construction, and getting lost. The technologies help to know the drivers when and where congestion will take place to get rid of it.
