Executives must accept ecosystems and collaborative skills to embrace new technologies, beat the market, and solve pressing societal problems. Teamwork will be essential in future competitions.
FREMONT, CA: Today, businesses are under tremendous pressure to generate ever-increasing amounts of value. The rapid acceleration of technology is altering how and what consumers purchase. As organizations scramble to meet rising consumer and societal expectations, they must contend with record-high inflation eroding profit margins, the effects of climate change heightened geopolitical tensions, and the realization that the structure of cross-border trade, foreign investment, and globalization is fundamentally shifting. No company could provide the complex, ever-evolving solutions consumers and society require annually.
The seismic upheavals in the marketplace have presented businesses with a stark choice: accelerate their transformation or risk utter devastation. Every institution or nation could aspire to progress significantly on climate change, economic inequality, or the energy transition. The global community needs to be more cohesive and reach across borders and social and economic differences to develop diverse thought and new capabilities. They must reassess their methods of operation. Competition has long been the default mode for businesses across all industries; competition will always be required to promote growth.

The moment has come to acknowledge that collaborative models may beat competitive ones. Understanding when and how to blend these seemingly contradictory methods could be the key to success in a rapidly changing world. The business collaborations provide firms instant access to the data, talents, and technologies that foster innovation and enhanced agility and resiliency. In the same way that flora and fauna collaborate in nature, these ecosystems are becoming increasingly crucial for businesses to adapt, thrive, and endure.
An EY poll of business leaders operating inside at least one ecosystem attributes an average of 13.7 percent of total yearly sales, 12.9 percent of cost savings, and 13.3 percent of incremental profitability to this mode of operation. Due to the data, relationships, and technology that these ecosystems provide, EY clients may unlock long-term, sustainable value. Firms must adequately deploy ecosystem business models to realize the full benefits of collaboration, which takes time. They cannot get isolated initiatives; they must integrate into the organizational culture.
CEOs and corporate leaders adopt a zero-sum perspective. The issue with this mentality is that it restricts the opportunity to respond fast, align with others with complementary capabilities, and rapidly develop to efficiently and successfully bring products to the market. The organization is contemplating a proposal to split into two separate organizations, subject to a vote by partners. One of the key benefits is the possibility of extending the ecosystem with previously restricted partners and alliances. As technology innovation advances in an increasing economic and social complexity climate, the immediacy of collaboration will only increase in the coming years.
