A luxury automobile company is envisioning a new interaction between humans, machines, and nature with the launch of a car inspired by the movie Avatar.
FREMONT, CA: Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new car, Mercedes Benz Vision AVTR concept vehicle, representing a far-forward look at the company's products in terms of design, materials, and technologies. The latest car has been designed inspired by the James Cameron film Avatar, representing a sustainable vision of zero-emission mobility. Vision AVTR is a fully-electric, AWD, 4-seat concept that features a 110-kWh battery and a 700-km range and is M-B's idea of a sustainable luxury form of electromobility. The VISION AVTR idea uses 100 percent recyclable organic battery technology. It harnesses a host of artificial intelligence to boost vehicle performance and productivity, comprising integrated solar-panels created to provide power back to the grid.
James Cameron's Avatar team collaborated with the M-B engineering team on the idea to spur new forms of interaction with a car. AVTR embraces the future mobility vision of Mercedes-Benz engineers, designers, and trend researchers for the distant future. The VISION AVTR practices what M-B calls a holistic idea that blends styling by integrating the design themes of the interior, exterior, and user experience, a design structure specified inside-out. Inspired by various creatures from the movie Avatar, its stretched 'One Bow' organic design apparently offers some intense insight into M-B's future design language.

In the car, there is no steering wheel, where the tiller is replaced by a multifunctional control component in the center console. Owners need to place their hands on the control unit to start the car. The new car can identify its owner by their heartbeat and respiratory pattern. A dash transformed into a curved display module is used to display info and connect customers to the outside world. A first for M-B, the VISION AVTR idea, uses a battery highlighting graphene-based organic cell chemistry that is free of rare-earth components and metals. The elements of the battery are compostable and even recyclable, making them free from fossil resources and connecting the vehicle into part of the circular economy. That sustainable vision elongates to the interior, using M-B's vegan Dinamica leather, and the AVTR's floor is concealed with a fast-growing rattan called Karuun, harvested by hand.
