IoT devices- the new employees at work
Today’s workplaces have transformed into the connected systems where human-workforce functions in accordance with technology. People and machines share job duties which positively have an impact on the organization’s productivity. Internet of things (IoT) in the workplace involves a variety of hardware with technologies as smart devices, robots, and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and create new opportunities for organizations.
Organizations should follow some ways to manage their IoT devices as their employees:
Giving devices identity: Organizations should embrace IoT devices as privileged users who have access to sensitive information rather than as pieces of technology. IoT devices should be assigned identity and provisioned appropriately. Identity helps their activity to be monitored and managed throughout their life cycle on the network.
Applying device governance: After giving devices identity to the devices, policy-based authentication should be applied. IoT devices are treated as an easy attack vector for unauthorized users to gain access to confidential information. They should not be neglected after deployment as these devices acts as the conduit between the internet and the organization’s environment. Device authentication and access should be governed and revisited regularly. Devices also should be provided with software updates, bug fixes, and new firmware.
Managing device passwords: managing passwords needs routine resets and multifactor. IoT devices contain passwords which grant authentication to systems, files, and data. These passwords should be updated routinely and closely managed to protect the vital information they store.
Creating an IoT security squad: To keep IoT devices most effective, security, IT, and asset management teams should collaborate to manage and secure IoT devices. Advanced organizations are maintaining dedicated security executives to secure their IoT devices.
Monitoring device: Machines are highly predictable, and any abnormal behavior indicates if there is an unauthorized user controlling device. IoT devices should be monitored to identify unusual activity, check for necessary patch updates, and confirm the devices are still in the right network segment. The abnormalities can go undetected without proper monitoring processes.
Managing IoT devices like employees is one of the best ways to monitor potential threats and anomalies. As the number of IoT devices in workplaces grows, organizations eliminate IoT as a threat and utilize the productivity potential of IoT devices.
