https://www.cioapplications.com/news/iot-applications-for-smart-cities-nid-4020.htmlSmart city and smart homes are two impeccable applications for the implementation of IoT in the rapidly growing urban life. Cities are taking to IoT as a means of reducing the burden of space crunch and strained resources while paving the way toward economic growth.

What are Smart Cities?

A smart city is a collocation of government, society, and technology that attempts to meet the intensified demand for a sustainable environment. The newest trends around the globe implemented to turn a city smart are as follows:

•  Sensors fabricated into bridges, roadways, and railways can work as a deterrent to degradations by sensing effects of seismic forces, and other wear and tear.

•  Sensors inside apartments can recognize the absence or presence of people and therefore control lighting, heating, and other systems to curb energy expenditure whenever necessary.

•  Through facial recognition software installed within the sensors in apartments, corporate buildings, and government offices, security can be revamped manifold.

Why Should We Move to Smart Cities?

The incorporation of IoT might appear to be a mere method of increasing convenience at first glance, as no one is in dire need of a toaster connected to the internet. However, this same notion does not apply within the city foundation. It is more about the achievement of essential goals like increasing resident safety, improving infrastructure, and cutting costs and energy usage to make the city greener.

As more people relocate to cities, the existing nuisance of traffic congestion is steadily worsening. However, this can be improved with the help of IoT, where smart controls can accommodate commute efficiently and maintain a smooth flow of traffic. Water, one of the fundamental components for our survival is in scarce, and IoT can transform the way we consume it by producing real-time data on consumption, wastage, and management.

The right IoT platform will aggregate, interpret, and process the data generated by smart devices, corroborating that the infrastructure is in the right place to take smart cities into the advanced age of connectivity.
