Training new data center workers carry the inherent risk of them making a mistake and bringing the cloud down with something as simple as flipping the wrong switch.
Depending on the size and scope of the outage, the consequences could range from insignificant to catastrophic – think security breaches, significant financial loss, or even an impact on global markets.
This is precisely why the data center industry must move away from traditional classroom training or "death by PowerPoint."
While VR and AR are not yet widely used in business, they do provide safe environments for training new employees. Other industries that require a high level of precision, such as aerospace and manufacturing, are already seeing the benefits of using immersive technology to quickly train new employees. Data centers can also benefit from using AR and VR to eliminate ambiguity and confusion in the learning process.
VR And AR Offer Different Experiences but Achieve Similar Goals

VR entails the creation of an entire 3D environment that corresponds to the actual engineering space or data center.
A technician puts on a headset like the Oculus Quest while sitting in a conference room or even at home, completely taking over the user's vision. Before entering the facility, the technician can practice tasks and become acquainted with sophisticated equipment in a virtual environment.
AR, on the other hand, augments rather than replaces a person's vision. For more advanced interactions in a mixed-reality setting, a technician can view overlays in the environment with a smartphone or by wearing transparent smart glasses like Microsoft HoloLens.
Remote mentoring is especially effective in augmented reality applications. A technician wearing the glasses serves as the hands in the field, while an expert anywhere in the world serves as a guide.
The remote guide can provide step-by-step instructions and even point to specific buttons to press, levers to pull, or areas to clean up.
