How Drones Aid in Weather Forecasting

By CIO Applications| Thursday, February 20, 2020

Meteorologists are leveraging drones to capture real-time weather data for weather forecasting as well as understanding the changing weather patterns across the globe.

FREMONT, CA: Drones are contributing to a wide range of applications, from vacuuming up ocean waste to delivering pizza. The rise of drones is also replacing many of the dangerous as well as high paying jobs. Various industries are leveraging drone services for operational purposes. For instance, the increased usage of drones has led the researchers towards developing specialized unmanned aircraft vehicles that can gather weather data. According to ProPhotoUAV, such a capability would enable scientists to make weather predictions with the aid of real-time data. Meanwhile, the constant improvement in drone technology will directly impact the reliability of drone-based weather predictions.

Currently, meteorologists are using radar, satellites, mobile measurements, and weather balloons to surround storms and capture as much data as possible. However, there is a gap in current data generation methods that can be filled by the drones. Drones will allow scientists to receive risk-free data that could not be procured in any other way. For instance, when there is a need to fly into the middle of a storm, it would be much safer, efficient as well as affordable to send a robust drone rather than an aircraft with a human operator inside.

Apart from aerial weather forecasting, oceanic researchers are leveraging sea drones to help forecast weather conditions and understand the changing weather conditions across the globe. Equipment such as Saildrones is being used for the above purpose. Saildrones can be equipped with various types of sensors in order to gather and transmit real-time measurements, including wind, humidity, temperature, solar radiation, and weather patterns. Such data are then being used for weather forecasting as well as research purposes. Such a capability will enable the meteorologists to understand and study various factors that impact weather conditions.

The advancements in drone technology will further enhance the accuracy of the weather forecasts and enable the meteorologists with research and analysis.
