FREMONT, CA: Gemini, a crypto platform, has acquired Shard X, a leading developer of secure multi-party computation (MPC) cryptographic technology. Shard X's MPC technology will be integrated into Gemini's distributed, multi-site key management and signature infrastructure, significantly boosting the speed with which Gemini can move customer assets and providing support for new asset listings and usage on the Gemini platform.
"Integrating MPC technology into our wallets will enable secure and faster crypto transfers that will help our customers keep pace with liquidity needs and market demands," stated Tyler Winklevoss, CEO of Gemini.

Gemini has over $30 billion of crypto assets under custody, serving a range of individual and institutional customers. The addition of Shard X's MPC will work in tandem with all other aspects of Gemini's custody offering, which includes role-based governance protocols, multiple layers of biometric access controls, as well as physical security to safeguard the sensitive key material that handles customers' assets, which is safely stored in government-rated hardware security modules (HSMs).
Yaniv Neu-Ner, Nikita Lesnikov, and Navaho De Wet developed Shard X in 2018 with the purpose of making the crypto ecosystem more secure. MPC technology from Shard X generates key fragments that are utilized in a distributed signature protocol without ever reconstructing a full private key. The team has created a portable MPC implementation that is designed to work in high-security contexts like HSMs, assuring the highest integrity and secure processing of private key fragments that protect digital assets.
