Evolving Edge Computing
Computing is reaching to the edge of networking. It’s becoming clear that edge computing which comprises a broad spectrum of technologies and is developing the potential for various strategies and use cases, for both the end users and service providers. Whether the name of the solution is fog computing, distributed intelligence or reverse cloud, there's no question that the network edge and its computing possibilities are emerging today.
Edge Computing or Edge Analytics is a relatively new approach for many companies. While most of the computing architectures are used to send all data to the cloud, edge computing, processes data near the source and not all data are transmitted back to the Cloud. However, large-scale IoT deployments utilize this critical functionality because of the sheer volumes of data being generated.
Recently during the Mobile World Congress, a renowned company introduced its edge computing strategy with the launch of its new multi-access edge capabilities. The company's approach is to create a developer-centric platform for onboarding new applications that depend on low latency and proximity to consumers.
VMware, for example, has signaled a significant shift in its IoT strategy by introducing a range of edge computing solutions designed for specific use cases. The company says these solutions will feature VMware vSAN hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) software, VMware vSphere and VMware Pulse IoT Center, and will be developed in collaboration with many technology partners.
Variously known as cloudlets, microdata centers, or fog nodes, these edge resources address some of the challenges created when organizations run data-heavy workloads increasingly in the cloud. These types of advanced solutions are architected to address both functional limits of the cloud model as well as operational realities of IoT data.
