Edge Computing Developments to Watch in 2022 and Beyond
While edge computing is still in its infancy, enterprises are trying to get data closer to the edge; in this article, we highlight the most important trends they should watch for.
FREMONT, CA: In recent years, the IoT ecosystem has expanded fast, along with increased data from endpoint devices.
However, many organizations that have spent the last decade transferring data out of their data centers and into the cloud are learning that it makes no sense to send all the data produced by IoT devices to the cloud for processing.
The enormous quantity of IoT data generated is one of the primary issues. IDC, a technology research and consultancy group, forecasts that by 2025, there will be 55.7 billion connected devices worldwide, of which 75 percent will be connected to an IoT platform. IDC predicts that linked IoT devices will generate 73.1 ZB of data by 2025, up from 18.4 ZB in 2019. This data will originate from security and video monitoring, but industrial IoT applications will also contribute significantly.
Edge computing is a technological paradigm that places compute resources physically close to endpoint devices. Edge devices include purpose-built gateways and servers, on-premises virtualized data centers, and now "edge cloud"—several remote data centers positioned close to the activity and provided as a service.
The objective of edge computing is the same regardless of the device deployed in a given use case: to gather and analyze data from endpoints and then use that data to drive subsequent actions by those endpoints in real-time. As edge computing and the IoT ecosystem continue to evolve in 2022, the following themes can be anticipated:
Spending swells together with data creation: According to a report by MarketsandMarkets in October 2021, the market for edge computing will increase from $36.5 billion in 2021 to $87.3 billion in 2026, at a compound yearly growth rate of 19 percent. The market includes various items, such as hardware, software, and networking infrastructure. Researchers noted the growing adoption of IoT across industries, exponentially expanding data volumes and network traffic, and the rising need for low-latency processing and real-time, automated decision-making solutions as drivers driving the expansion of edge computing.
A growing number of companies will offer products and services for edge computing: There are a rising number of vendors offering goods and services in this market for enterprise IT leaders wishing to engage in edge deployments. Established hardware manufacturers, such as Dell EMC, HPE, and IBM, and internet tech titans like AWS and Google selling distributed cloud edge, comprise the market. In addition, numerous new entrants in the technology sector and many companies offer software and services, such as distributed edge data management platforms.
The edge environment grows: The edge is not a defined location. There is no fixed definition of how close edge computing must be to endpoints to be considered an edge. The edge could be a ruggedized gateway located in close proximity to remote sensors or a nearby data center. Edge increasingly includes distributed cloud edge. Meanwhile, Forrester Research identifies "data center marketplaces as a new edge hosting alternative," with enterprises able to purchase computing capacity from smaller, local data centers in a cooperative marketplace supported by data center aggregators.
