Couchbase Enables Hammerhead To Create A World-Class Cycling Experience
An innovative cycling device developed by Hammerhead, called Karoo 2, uses Couchbase Mobile to provide cyclists with detailed ride reports and rich data to enable them to track their progress while cycling
FREMONT, CA: "Couchbase is at the center of what we do at Hammerhead, and its technology has provided us with unmatched scalability," said Brian Oberholtzer, vice president of software at Hammerhead. "Couchbase's ability to sync, even when network connectivity is nonexistent, competitively positions Hammerhead in the industry. The simplicity of getting a cycling route onto Karoo is what makes us unique. With Couchbase, we are able to provide the best experience for athletes and are excited about where we can take our product innovation in the future."
One of the leading providers of modern databases for enterprise applications, Couchbase unveiled that it has teamed up with Hammerhead, a technology company dedicated to inspiring and empowering people through cycling to reach the full potential of their athletic abilities. It features cutting-edge technology, including predictive path detection, at the heart of Hammerhead's Karoo 2, an advanced cycling computer powered by Couchbase Mobile. For a more reliable and easy cycling experience for users, Hammerhead uses Couchbase for data synchronization, independent of the internet connection.
The combination of the scalability, agility, and flexibility of Couchbase with Amazon Web Services (AWS) allows Hammerhead to deliver a fast and seamless cycling experience no matter where cyclists are, and at any time they are cycling. Karoo and Couchbase Mobile send detailed reports to users' cloud accounts based on sensors like GPS, speedometers, heart rate monitors, and barometers. The Karoo can also provide turn-by-turn directions and maps for riders to follow their preferred routes, which is crucial since internet connectivity is inconsistent during rides due to Couchbase Mobile's offline capabilities.
"As an agile-oriented business, we conduct frequent software releases. With Couchbase's incredibly resilient version management, we've been able to add data incrementally as we've put out releases without running into any data migration problems," added Oberholtzer.
The Hammerhead team created bidirectional syncing through the AWS cloud and added third-party integrations to the Karoo platform to allow cyclists to track their rides. The Karoo is accessible to cyclists of all levels, who benefit from Hammerhead's data collection from beginners to pros. Providing a reliable database for all Hammerhead customers is one of Hammerhead's top priorities as it grows.
Ravi Mayuram, CTO of Couchbase said, "We are thrilled to partner with Hammerhead in its ongoing development of Karoo 2 Couchbase Mobile was purpose-built for use cases that encounter unreliable connectivity but require an always-on experience. We look forward to innovating further alongside Hammerhead to provide customers with seamless and uninterrupted syncing capabilities across devices."
