FREMONT, CA: New schools across the world are adopting modular school designs, based on the latest research on enhancing the learning experience of students. The designs focus not only on the comfort of the inhabitants but also the aesthetic features. Often, traditional cladding and roofing are also employed to complement its design with the overall infrastructure.
In this regard, the SEISMIC project, funded by the UK, aims to revolutionize school designs and provide a standardized digital construction production system. The consortium comprises of Blacc ltd, Bryden Wood, Eliott Group, McAvoy Group, and Manufacturing Technology Center (MTC).

The partnership between the companies aims to leverage standardization and develop components capable of assisting offsite specialists in attaining increased efficiency, both in terms of scale and manufacturing capability. It can also introduce a higher level of stability, predictability, and transparency to augment the procurement process, which benefits not only the client but also the supply chain.
The project will cement the basis of construction solutions, enabling enhanced efficiencies across the offsite, near site, and on-site constructions. It signifies a unique path which will lead to higher drive and delivery of government construction targets. The integration of digital construction will potentially result in the decrease of construction parts, contributing significantly to a reduction in carbon footprint. The solutions developed by the consortium will eventually lead to the standardization of modular frame, adding considerably to the future of construction. The consortium has also built a universal connector to enable vertical and horizontal frame connection.
As of now, the demand for construction of new schools in the UK is continually rising, almost at a rate of 500 schools a year with an investment pipeline of 5 billion pounds. However, lack of innovation in the last few years in the construction sector has resulted in an imbalance of demand and supply, with demand far outstripping supply. However, the solution developed by the consortium of companies is aimed at delivering modular schools at the required pace and volume.
The standardization will streamline the design and development, enabling seamless construction of schools. It will enhance the interaction between multiple suppliers, sharing orders, and smoothing order books, ensuring high stability and visibility.
