Biometrics to have a Strong Impact on IoT Technology

As a consequence, security experts are turning to new, innovative approaches to keep IoT devices secure, such as biometric ID. Biometrics may also offer a few benefits for IoT devices, particularly those intended for medical use.
These security measures are not hack-proof — no approach is — but they can provide a valuable, difficult-to-crack protective layer that is (usually) convenient for end-users.

Biometric Security for IoT Devices
There are a few different biometric security options that are already in use or are being tested in IoT devices.
Fingerprints, unless damaged, remain the same from birth to death and serve as a simple identifier that is unique to each individual. Fingerprint identification technology has also advanced in recent decades as a result of its use by law enforcement, making it a popular choice for device security.
Voice recognition is another option that has recently gained popularity in computer security as advances in artificial intelligence speech analysis make distinguishing between different voices practical and reliable. Many consumer IoT devices, particularly home assistants like Alexa or Google Home, already include voice recognition as a core feature. They also support using voice to access various features, such as multi-user profiles.
Iris and retinal blood vessel scanning add another layer of security to IoT by allowing end-users to access their devices by scanning their eyes. Iris scanning technology is already in a few consumer devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S9.
More Advanced Forms of Biometric Identification
More advanced biometrics can identify a user's identity over time based on behavioral patterns. A biometrics tracking system, for instance, can observe a user's typing habits, such as how they capitalize words, the average time between keystrokes, and whether specific letters take longer to reach than others. Depending on sets of sample typing information, the tracking system can then determine which user is accessing a device. Other systems can determine a user's identity by observing their gait or posture.
Businesses can use behavioral biometrics in device security to keep unauthorized parties out while also providing authorized users with the appropriate level of access and a method for automatically setting up their personal user profiles. They can also configure IoT devices so that users or administrators can create multiple profiles with distinct preferences. When an end-user scans their fingerprint or iris, their profile is automatically accessed.
This technology has a number of potential applications. Based on a combination of biometric scanners and behavioral analysis, a smart security system could automatically give access to certain areas of a building. When a fingerprint or iris scan is presented to a smart coffee or tea maker with multiple user preferences programmed in its system, it may begin brewing the appropriate drink.
