The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a series of unprecedented events that are continuing to redefine and redesign the industry, necessitating a rethinking of long-held standard practices and adaptation to changing market conditions.
Change, which has often been gradual in a centuries-old industry like forging, is now accelerating at a rapid pace. This rapid pace of change has created new opportunities, allowing for beneficial supply chain revisions to material sourcing, strategic planning, shop-floor workflows, and the global web of industry partnerships.

Workflow Changes
Most forgers have used a traditional mass or batch-and-queue production system for several generations. Batch-and-queue processing, in which several product components are processed at one stage before moving on to the next step as a group, is increasingly recognized as inefficient from an operational standpoint. Nonetheless, despite widespread industry recognition of how batch-and-queue production tends to increase inventory, lengthen lead times, and require more floor space for production, many have been reluctant to change.
However, as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, new health regulations and safety guidelines have put a premium on floor space. With social distancing becoming the necessity, the floor space required for production items, combined with the frequently irregular workflow paths in batch-and-queue processing, makes appropriate employee spacing difficult, with parts frequently requiring excessive travel between work stations. Many companies are reconsidering, or have already switched to, a one-piece cellular workflow in order to maintain a healthy and safe shop floor.

The transition to a cellular workflow also increases production velocity and flexibility while decreasing capital requirements, benefiting both manufacturers individually and the supply chain as a whole.
Material Sourcing
The spread of the Coronavirus is being felt globally across operations, with many affected areas located at the heart of international supply chains. Due to regional and national lockdowns, the cost and availability of materials from abroad have fluctuated dramatically. While some companies are paying expedited freight costs, recently imposed tariffs, and premiums to secure supply and hold capacity on certain materials, others are considering alternative strategies and re-evaluating their reliance on overseas suppliers. Many companies have begun to supplement or completely shift their supply chain to domestically sourced suppliers in order to decrease their reliance on foreign suppliers.
Manufacturers have gained significant control over their supply chains as they increasingly choose to source raw materials from within the United States. Despite being perceived as more expensive than overseas sourcing, domestic sourcing has always maintained a quality advantage. This advantage in reliability and quality, combined with an inherent avoidance of rising tariffs, lockdown-related shipping delays, exorbitant logistics costs, freight expenses, as well as geopolitical disagreements that can fundamentally change supply chains with no warning, have all brought domestic material sourcing into pricing parity or better with foreign suppliers while posing significantly less risk.
