In an interview with CIO Applications, John Glanville, CEO and President, Maps.com sheds light on how their Map 101 platform delivers maps, geography, and more to teachers and students in a secure and efficient manner.
What are the challenges your clients face on a daily basis, and how do you help them address their evolving needs?
We align our solutions with the customers’ requirements to help them pace up with the ever-evolving technological world and achieve their purpose or core objectives. In the case of schools, the primary customer is the teacher or resource specialist, like a librarian. As the approach to education evolves, our Maps101 platform serves a larger and larger audience, including specialists in science, technology, art, and languages, students, and the home school environment. This enables teachers to focus on the more crucial tasks without worrying about how many layers of security are embedded into a service. For example, in the education sector, classroom teachers can focus on interacting or communicating with students. Teachers are not concerned about how a service arrives on their desktop or whiteboard in their classroom. They just want it to work smoothly and facilitate the educational and learning process—that’s what we do.
We align our solutions with the customers’ requirements to help them keep pace with the fast-evolving world of information and technology to better achieve their goals and purpose
Whenever a topic or subject is discussed in a classroom, students need to know the details of it, including answers to what, who, where, when, and why of it. Great content engages the curious student, for example students are curious to know the origin of people and how they migrate. Maps tell this story in a unique and clear way. We make learning more interesting with animation and interactive maps to present information in a simpler way. For example, our platform offers a vast, curated collection of engaging, standards-aligned, visually impactful resources to help students understand how weather changes around the planet. This ensures student success on their path to learning. We have a history of designing maps for major textbook publishers and providing digital resources for classrooms for more than three decades. We aim to curate the complex data and information by field experts and deliver visual content for use in classrooms. Our platform has more than 4,500 maps created by a professional team of cartographers.
Teachers and students do not need to spend valuable time on the internet searching and choosing the perfect map, they can have a curriculum-compliant map at their fingertips within a second. Map 101 has numerous videos on subjects to enable users to better understand the cause and conditions around the world, historical, current, and predictive models for the future. More importantly, our Lesson Maps extend the basic lesson plan to support student-guided discovery and direct instruction using dynamic and interactive content. The typical lesson plan is used to teach a subject following a particular structure in textbooks and collateral materials. Our Lesson Maps brings a lesson plan to life. Students can integrate and access all the information on a particular topic, including the entire history timeline and the spatial relationships throughout history. In fact, our team spends significant time learning how people understand what’s going on around them. We use imagery, graphics, information, and data to encourage people to learn better.
Extending the lessons of Maps101 into the business environment, one of our clients used the solution while expanding into the European region. It equipped their employees with the opportunity to understand all the nuances by offering location-specific information.
What does the future hold for Maps.com?
At present, we are concentrating on launching the upgraded version of Map101. As we are come out of the pandemic and people start moving beyond their homes, we are targeting the corporate side to facilitate their hybrid approach to manage their workforce remotely in the office and outside. Today, customers are highly particular about the places they visit. As a result, travel and tourism, especially the cruise sector, need extra efforts to convince customers to come back and ensure their safety while traveling. Our platform helps individuals identify locations they should avoid while identifying healthier locals though offering location-specific information in a timely manner. Lastly, we see an increased demand for travel related geographic content, including hiking maps and Road Atlases in the consumer. Our aim is to fulfill the demand for geographic content and deliver maximum value to clients.
