“Healthcare is very traditional and conservative field, where the natural delay in adoption of innovation serves the purpose of caution,” says Mattias Paulsson, CEO, Lytics. The rising importance of the healthcare industry in the US is leading to the espousal of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to organize patient routes and make treatment plans better. The growing usage of smartphones has enabled patients to access intelligent personal virtual assistant on their device, aiding the healthcare apps.

To contribute to this paradigm shift, in 2011, Lytics moved out of Expertmaker, an AI company, to offer increased efficiency, less pain, and lower costs to the healthcare sector by using applied AI. The company stepped in this sector with two assets—an electronic data capture system for clinical trials and expertise in evolutionary applied AI models allowing individualization. In its attempt to develop advanced analytical tools in the healthcare industry, Lytics faced a number of challenges. “We encountered promising areas where data was plenty but we could not identify a business case or the reverse,” says Paulsson. Transforming data from electronic medical records to AI supported system was the second big challenge. Intensifying the problem was the issue of processing the data of thousands of variables.

“With a goal to revolutionize healthcare, there really was no option but to be the very best,” adds Paulsson. Lytics’ access to rich data, dialysis organizations, and their expertise in the clinical context helped them provide better equipped solutions for the market needs. Additionally, the company’s experience in clinical trials and data capture to create new data flow helped them generate better precision in their predictions for patients with a chronic condition in general and end stage renal disease in particular.

Lytics’ development of a MVP as an offline solution was the initial step towards success. It helped the company to reinforce the predictive model and construct a platform to fuel work and deliver quality. Lytics developed solutions such as LYTICS VÖR that provided a complete descriptive overview of a patients’ status. The solution offers more relevant information and predictions and offers new perspectives, reinforcing the knowledge. It also helps identify new preventive measures. LYTICS VÖR is easily accessible and its automatic risk ranking of patients provides fully configurable views such as trends, my list, and categories of patients. “By adding our prediction models, patients that are not on the radar today can be detected,” says Paulsson. The automated solution offers healthcare professionals with all the information at their fingertips via a visual presentation, helping them research faster.

In the last three months, Lytics has been focusing on the automation of business, to provide everything under one platform. Having worked with international clients for years, Lytics believes that in the long run there will be a growing acceptance for data-driven decisions and AI will help supply personalized medicines within the next decade. Lytics is now associated with Centers for Dialysis Care, a leader in the dialysis community working towards revolutionizing dialysis treatment. Lytics’ AI solutions help the company select patients for preventive interventions. “We expect to grow and expand the role of AI in the daily lives of patients and nurses over time,” adds Paulsson.
