CLIFTON PARK, NY: With the release of ParaView 5.0, Kitware has achieved milestone in optimizing the use of graphic cards and scaling the systems to handle large data sets. Following the shadow of ParaView 4.4, Paraview 5.0opened the gates to new OpenGL features. Utkarsh Ayachit, Lead Developer of ParaView at Kitware said, "In version 3.0, the user interface (UI) switched to Qt; version 4.0 brought the unified Properties panel and modularization; and now, version 5.0 introduces a brand-new rendering backend, marking the first big change to the rendering infrastructure in ParaView's lifetime."
Kitware’s ParaView team has introduced Visualization Tool Kit (VTK) as an upgraded engine to its brand new rendering backend feature. The redesigned VTK engine bags additional capabilities such as polygonal and volumetric rendering. While using this VTK engine, ParaView requires OpenGL 3.2 Core context, to support previous version of graphic card and the backend. “With this release, we have laid the groundwork for modernizing the rendering engine and kept an eye towards the future HPC and visualization,” explained Ayachit.

In the alpha release, Intel’s Mesa and OpenSWR made efforts to enter into Linux platform as well by introducing the binaries for Linux within ParaView5.0. OpenSWR a highly scalable OpenGL compatible software rasterizer allows use of unmodified visualization software running on anything from laptops, to workstations, to compute nodes in High Performance Computing (HPC).
With the implementation of a high performance engine, the windowing system is enabled with an off- screen which uses EGL for a better windowing system. The system allows an open source software implementation system which is independent of any other windowing systems like Android, Windows X and many more. The testing process utilizes the binaries of Linux which is induced in OSPRay plug-in, a feature added in the latest upgrade. OSPRay is a ray tracing based rendering engine for the finest visualization. It includes an open, powerful and easy-to-use library, allowing the user to easily build interactive applications that uses ray tracing. ParaView 5.0 also performs a run-time analysis of the simulations that are generated from CAM5, Community Atmosphere Model through its Catalyst Adaptor. With the vision that the modern data needs to be scaled and viewed in different dimensions, an Accelerated Algorithm plug-in is built-into ParaView5.0. Two modules of the algorithm - Flying Edges2D and Flying Edges3D generate isosurfaces from 2D and 3D data.
