Enter EDZ Systems, an innovative technology solutions provider. The company enables legal firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, and commercial businesses to streamline systems efficiencies, maximize resources and improve strategic decision making. Through a unique approach, the company brings comprehensive skill sets, industry knowledge, and a passion for technology to help organizations increase profitability and productivity. As a minority and woman-owned business, EDZ Systems has been serving its diverse clientele for over 6 years. In an interview with CIO Applications, Elizabeth DeZeeuw, and Daryl Hubbard, the leaders of EDZ Systems, discusses at large the company’s capabilities in streamlining business processes across the organization.
What were some of the factors that led to the conception of EDZ Systems?
Elizabeth: The idea for the Intelligent RMS stemmed from my professional experience. I was an executive vice president for DST Systems in Kansas City, and I found many gaps in the existing systems. For example, the information about employees, their work, and financial information relating to compensation was located in independent systems that do not communicate with each other. Moreover, law firms and corporate legal departments are highly reliant on paper-based processes to perform various tasks. As legal firms are document-intensive businesses, their day-to-day work generates huge stacks of paper files, including agreements, contracts, court pleadings, minutes, and more. We understood that the volume of content created and the collaborative nature of work means that law firms and legal departments could benefit greatly from a successful digital transformation initiative. From my personal experience, I knew that the two most integral facets of any business are the people and the processes. For that reason, we developed an all-in-one enterprise platform that enables resource efficiency, data clarity, and scalability by focusing on these two elements of business management.
EDZ Systems’ Intelligent Resource Management System (IRMS) is a business intelligence software solution developed for law firms and legal departments. The platform provides organizations with the opportunity to access data from one easy-to-use system. The IRMS is a cloud-based platform that provides law firm management with easy access to client information, case and matter management, docketing, and timekeeping data.
Could you elaborate on some of the challenges you address in the legal market through your platform?
Elizabeth: The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the legal industry in a number of ways. Digital tools that support remote work and virtual collaboration have undoubtedly become critical assets for businesses to stay afloat. In this regard, law firms require an end-to-end cloud platform that provides easy access to their work-essential data. Our platform provides access to that data from a single, easy-to-use system and addresses this longstanding predicament.
Many law firms make huge investments in accounting systems, payroll systems, resource management systems, and more. However, such a system often builds data siloes within the organization, and they are longer effective in managing the intricacies of a law firm. Our IRMS platform breaks down the existing data siloes of an organization and provides better transparency into a firm’s client data.
IRMS comes with essential features and capabilities required to manage any type of workflow in a law firm. Be it resource management, compensation management, activity management, finance management, or time management, IRMS acts as a source of truth capable of managing the workflows effectively
IRMS also contains essential features and capabilities required to manage any type of workflow in a law firm. Be it resource management, compensation management, activity management, finance management, or time management, IRMS acts as a single source of truth capable of managing the workflows effectively.
The platform’s compensation management module gives law firms greater visibility, particularly in terms of employee compensation. The module provides law firm management with performance analytics, comparison groups, compensation worksheets, budget worksheets, compensation dashboards, and reports. With that, organizations can have real-time access to information that gives leaders a 360-degree view of their business. Moreover, it enables them to understand the recent developments in a particular industry group and if that group generates enough business. This helps law firms quickly adjust with the market, implementing pay cuts rather than layoffs.
What are some of the remarkable features that give IRMS a competitive edge?
Hubbard: As a resource management system built in the cloud, IRMS is easy to implement, cost-effective, and easy to integrate. We have built APIs that enable organizations to integrate IRMS with their existing systems, providing them with seamless access to their data. We understand that no two companies’ business processes are the same. And for that reason, organizations can custom-build the system based on their requirements using configuration management tools. This allows them to configure the system without hiring any developers. The platform will also help organizations meet their diversity and inclusion goals with ease, as well as compare the compensation of different employees to ensure that each employee is paid commensurately.
The security aspect of IRMS is worth mentioning as well, and we achieve this in a variety of ways. The organization can restrict system access to specified members and enhance security. We have integrated the asearch engine with the platform to allow users to browse the internet securely, while our proprietary security elements ensure additional data security.
IRMS is also more cost-effective and versatile than any other resource management system available in the market today. Organizations can bring various tasks, including resource management, compensation management, reporting, activity management, client management, and matter management, under a single umbrella, providing over 2000 dashboards that the clients can use without any additional payments.
Could you share an instance to highlight the benefits brought to one of your clients after implementing IRMS?
Hubbard: When the COVID-19 pandemic unleashed havoc in 2020, many law firm leaders found themselves facing a number of new obstacles. For instance, one such client had to suddenly manage a team of attorneys and support staff who worked remotely. The changes in the economic landscape as a result of the pandemic required the client to closely monitor changes in the firm’s business in specific industries. EDZ Systems IRMS helped the client address these challenges effectively during this crisis and regain full operational capacity.
What does the future hold for EDZ Systems?
Elizabeth: We are constantly focusing on improving our platform by adding new features and functionalities. As an organization, we believe that our platform is one of a kind in the legal industry. We plan to scale our product as an enterprise resource system in the days to come. In fact, IRMS can be used in any industry segment, but it is a natural fit for the legal industry. More importantly, we plan to build more APIs to compare the national rate, individual rate, and other parameters related to compensation management. With such initiatives, we focus on transforming many underserved industries through technology and innovation.
