Enabling Better Productivity with IoT
At GE, the Industrial Internet gives us an opportunity to rethink how we manage assets and operations across the industry. As more equipment becomes capable of connecting to the Internet, companies can become more predictive around their core business processes such as aircraft and line maintenance, crew scheduling, fuel management, navigation and flight planning and even gate turn times. This insight translates to major savings for companies. For example, a 1 percent improvement in aircraft engine maintenance efficiency can reduce related costs by $250 million annually. The benefits afforded by the Industrial Internet can also extend to passengers to improve the overall user experience of air travel. Imagine being able to construct the perfect trip from booking to airport departure to security clearance and then from flight to hotel and beyond. It really opens up possibilities far beyond what exists today.
Technology in Aerospace
There a few key things that will make the biggest difference in the short term.
The Big Data technologies are real, and it’s critical to have a strategy for building out our expertise and capabilities with data. Traditional data management tools and processes just won’t be able to keep up with all the growing data types; we will see in the next few years.

Getting the right teams with the right expertise in place will be hugely important in the next few years. As IoT increases the types and amounts of data available to us, companies must be ready, or ultimately it will just be a missed opportunity.
Second, Cloud is really changing the way we design and develop the tools that can utilize Big Data. Global organizations need to access data whenever and wherever necessary, so applications must be designed to support that. Cloud really does allow IT organizations the opportunity to think about how we can support global business teams with a more cost effective and highly reliable product. And, like Big Data, Cloud is a rapidly a growing part of overall IT organization strategy. Getting the right teams with the right expertise in place will be hugely important in the next few years.
Managing Team to be a Winner
Leading an IT organization is a tough job. Every day offers a new opportunity to positively impact an internal organization, a customer or someone within your own team. You have to know your business and be intimately engaged with the business strategy. That will drive an understanding of the climate in which you operate and the appetite within your business for advancing technology versus sustaining technology. You have to be willing to take risks As IT leaders, we have to balance how and where we take risk, but calculated and intelligent risk taking can be extremely impactful for an organization. We have to be disruptive, force change and drive new levels of innovation and capability for our companies. That doesn’t happen unless a leader set the culture of the IT organization to be one that is excited about change and risk taking.
Finally it’s all about the people themselves. I am fortunate to work with some very talented IT professionals who are committed to the success of GE. At the end of the day, we ask teams, and they respond because our leaders in IT understand the direction in which we are going, and that their work is a true enabler for our business and our customers.
