As a member of OMA SpecWorks, AVSystem is a proponent of open standards such as the Lightweight M2M protocol. LwM2M is the only IoT protocol with clearly defined provisioning processes, making it a perfect solution for building scalable and interoperable provisioning workflows. Slawomir Wolf, the CEO of AVSystem, strongly believes that interoperability is a foundation of a healthy IoT ecosystem. Making the right choice and starting an IoT deployment with a standard for device management ensures security and interoperability. This is critical to succeeding in the IoT industry, and that’s exactly where AVSystem shines. Following is the conversation that Wolf had with CIO Applications magazine to discuss the role played by AVSystem in addressing customers’ needs within the IoT space.
What are the challenges that companies face today, and how can AVSystem help?
With dynamically changing market demands, the exponential growth of IoT applications has become a natural phenomenon that will drive IoT development for the following years. Right now, telematics, asset tracking, e-health, and smart utilities like water, gas, or electricity are the main generators for the growth of IoT applications. We are surrounded by millions of devices that help us work smarter, live smarter, and cut costs on manual labor.
However, the truth is that only a small percentage of IoT applications are capable of providing remote device management, diagnostics, and predictive activities. We believe that this is because there is no single solid and secure device management protocol that would enable devices to be fully controlled and manageable both by MNOs and enterprises. One exception to that is the LwM2M protocol. Therefore, we think that the biggest challenge faced by IoT is low awareness about the importance of investing in device management solutions early on. A similar problem was faced by security and platform monitoring in the cloud services. The reason is always the same – it doesn’t bring an immediate business value, so it’s pushed to the side.
At AVSystem, we firmly believe that technology should be utilitarian—it should serve people. IoT projects should benefit the companies in the form of improved logistics, better chain management, better understanding of customers’ needs, better analytics, and lower operational costs. This is why we encourage the whole IT world to work together by utilizing open standards and form business partnerships. We think that such an attitude will enable us to propose real value to our customers and advance technology to benefit us all. AVSystem’s proposal for the industry are unique device management and market-proven solutions based on the Lightweight M2M standard. Our products ensure end-to-end device management by providing telcos and enterprises with features that guarantee interoperability, usability, security, and scalability throughout the entire IoT project.

Please walk us through the IoT solution that AVSystem provides. What are some of the benefits that clients get?
Imagine a world where an IoT device sends data only when needed, receives firmware upgrades when necessary, performs self-diagnostics, and makes essential improvements to restore its operations all on its own, fully automatic and self-centric. The technology behind all that is interoperable and allows IoT devices to work as part of one ecosystem, no matter the device vendor, application provider, and solution enabler. Imagine a world where any solution provider can seamlessly become a part of such an ecosystem. Our mission is to achieve such a state. At some point, we defined three words: build, deploy, operate.
This distinction is easy to understand. We help building and testing LwM2M devices, facilitate large-scale device provisioning processes to simplify IoT deployments. Lastly, we provide businesses with the means to take care of their devices throughout their entire lifecycle. Making Lightweight M2M a leading IoT device management standard is the way we delineate, and we encourage everyone in the market, especially members of the IoT ecosystem, to join us in this endeavor.
Please cite a case study where AVSystem helped one of the clients in attaining the desired level of outcome.
One of our finest customers is Traxens, an expert in providing high-value data and services for the supply chain industry. They furnish their devices with telemetry functionality and create new devices with extensive remote management capabilities. This is an interesting case because Traxens uses cellular and satellite connectivity together. Since satellite transmission is expensive, the company needed an optimized solution, and LwM2M enables it.
Connecting their devices to our IoT Device Management platform via the Lightweight M2M standard allowed Traxens to collect information from machines they lease and keep them up to date by issuing firmware over-the-air (FOTA) upgrades whenever they are needed. The company is now also able to track the status of its packages, including parameters such as temperature or humidity. The collected device data allowed their ops teams to perform proactive maintenance and resolve any encountered problems in a much more efficient way than before. What’s more, thanks to the scalable architecture of our platform and full device lifecycle management capabilities that enable automatic device provisioning and configuration, the company can now effortlessly roll out new devices without worrying about increased workloads.
What steers AVSystem ahead of the other players in the IoT space?
The key to AVSystem’s global success lies not in thwarting market competition but rather in how we answer the market demands. The ability to listen, watch, understand, and be able to define every single puzzle of the IoT ecosystem and foresee IoT trends gives us a fantastic opportunity to create what is the most expected and, therefore, the best. We believe that customer- and partner-centric strategy guarantees that AVSystem will become an IoT device management market leader and a trendsetter and preferred partner for the ecosystem members.
We’re technology experts and provide the most optimized solution on the market from a technological perspective. We don’t care so much about the content of telemetry data and particular industrial verticals as others do. Our verticals are strictly technological, like device provisioning, integration testing, or TinyML Ops.
What does the future hold for AVSystem?
One of the key goals that stand in front of our organization is to popularize device management and the Lightweight M2M standard. We never cease to emphasize that device management is a must from the very beginning of any IoT deployment. When introduced late, it can lead to vendor lock-in and poor interoperability, resulting in an operational nightmare for any business. We have created a very precise strategy to make LwM2M the industry’s most expected and most requested device management protocol.
To move things forward, we plan to expand geographically and open new offices in the fastest-growing IoT markets where our partners and customers can directly connect to our best-in-class sales, business, and, most importantly, local support. There is a solid and a new marketing strategy ready to be launched in the upcoming weeks, the one we have been working for quite some time with the finest industry experts and agencies that we believe will allow us to move forward with our plans—all to make the IoT intelligent and truly smart.
