Akademos has been recognized by CIO Applications Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top 25 Edtech Solution Companies - 2020,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry, and is also named among “,” reflecting its broader leadership. This profile has been developed by the CIO Applications research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Raj Kaji, CEO.
Raj Kaji, CEOFounded in 1999 by a university professor that saw first-hand how the exorbitant costs and complexity of textbook distribution weakened classroom learning, Akademos’ vision of a full-service online bookstore and course materials platform has become the model for efficient, cost-effective purchasing and distribution of new, used, rental and digital course materials. Following is the conversation that CIO Applications had with Akademos’ CEO, Raj Kaji, to learn more about the company and how it caters to every student’s right to affordable educational materials.
What are the challenges that CIOs face in the EdTech space, and how is Akademos effectively addressing these issues?
One of the most significant issues universities face in general is the transition from analog to digital; this has been happening for years, but COVID has accelerated this migration. The course materials ecosystem has become complex and difficult to manage without sophisticated software that seamlessly integrates into existing institutional systems.
CIOs are often asked to help facilitate a transition to digital but require help from specialized third parties to execute. We make it easy to create and implement a course materials strategy that results in increased student preparedness and academic success. We do this by providing an institution the tools to connect data to student outcomes and to track and measure the success of programs and initiatives.
Please shed some light on the EdTech solution that Akademos delivers.
We help universities think about course materials very differently and guide them through the transition to a technology driven solution from a historically manual operation.

Please cite a case study on how Akademos has enabled clients to overcome hurdles and attain desired outcomes.
The case of North Central College in suburban Chicago is a perfect example. Several years ago, their bookstore contract with another provider was expiring, and their VP for Finance engaged in a process to understand what options were available.
The school had experienced accelerating year-over-year declines in bookstore sales and needed a solution that would ensure course material affordability and increase educational content sales. After putting together a cross-functional committee that included individuals from the college’s technology team, they looked toward the future. They realized that using our platform to seamlessly deliver physical and digital course materials was the right long-term strategy.

They proceeded to work with us to integrate our technology with their systems to provide a full service platform that is entirely white-labeled and meets the needs of their students, faculty, and administrators. In the first year the college improved to a 99% faculty adoption rate by HEOA deadline, saw a 39% decrease in course material costs for students, and surpassed financial projections of spirit wear sales in their on-campus store.
At our core, we are a software company focused on building and providing a robust logistics and supply chain for colleges and universities while having the very best student and faculty facing software.
We look at the entire course materials ecosystem, not just books, and what drives success. This fall, we are launching integrated syllabus management software that seamlessly combines course material management with advanced functionality that allows universities to better create, maintain, and track syllabus information across departments while driving regulatory compliance.
We have the only product on the market that enables colleges and universities to bundle books with tuition, allows students to keep the books, and reduces the overall cost per credit each semester - EDGE Equitable Access. It’s getting lots of recognition and traction in the marketplace because of the long-term benefits for both the student and the institution.
What does the future hold for Akademos? Any footprint expansion plans or platform enhancement strategies that you can shed light upon?
The fundamental shift from physical to digital—which is a secular change that was present before COVID and has accelerated due to COVID is driving shifts throughout higher education. The course materials world is a key part of this. We have been helping guide universities through this transition for 20 years, and we look forward to providing even higher value to clients and their students in the future.
We see partnerships with other organizations becoming a more prominent part of our strategy as we seek to integrate additional functionality into our own platform. One recent example is our integration with CogBooks, a leading creator of adaptive learning courseware. We partnered with them to allow faculty to easily create custom content directly through our platform, which enables both a personalized learning experience while driving down costs for students.
