SEPTEMBER 2023CIOAPPLICATIONS.COM8CXO InsightsIN MY VIEWPRODUCT LED: NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGES OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION INLARGE SCALE COMPANIEShen asked to write a contributory article to the IT Industry, there was immediately a topic that came to my mind as it has been on top of my latest discussions within my professional and personal network, the role of product led in digital transformation. I have seen firsthand the challenges that companies face when trying to keep up with the ever-changing technological landscape. One approach that has gained popularity in recent years is the product-led approach to digital transformation. While this approach has many benefits, it also presents significant challenges, particularly in large-scale companies. As someone who has worked in a large-scale company myself, I have seen the potential pitfalls of this approach firsthand. While I am a strong proponent of a product-led approach to digital transformation, I believe that it must be implemented with care to avoid creating silos and ensure effective communication across product teams. The Benefits of a Product-Led ApproachA product-led approach focuses on creating a product that meets the needs of the customer, with the product team leading the charge. This approach can help large-scale companies in several ways, including:·Greater alignment with customer needs: By focusing on the customer and creating a product that meets their needs, companies can gain a competitive edge and build a loyal customer base.·Improved communication: A product-led approach can break down silos and encourage cross-functional collaboration. When teams work together towards a common goal, communication becomes more effective.·Faster innovation: With a product-led approach, teams are empowered to make decisions quickly and respond to changes in the market. This can lead to faster innovation and a more responsive company. As someone who has worked in a product-led environment, I have seen these benefits firsthand. By working closely with customers and focusing on their needs, we were able to build a product that met their expectations and set us apart from our competitors. By encouraging cross-functional collaboration and providing teams with the tools they needed to be successful, we were able to move quickly and innovate at a faster pace than ever before. The Drawbacks of a Product-Led ApproachWhile a product-led approach has many benefits, there are also some drawbacks to consider, including:·Potential for silos: When teams focus on their specific products, it can create silos and make it difficult for teams to communicate effectively across the organization.·Risk of losing sight of the big picture: When teams are focused on their specific products, it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture and the overall goals of the company.
