However, with the push for more energy-efficient innovation, operators have joined the climate effort more purposefully in 2022. Moving beyond delivering greater transparency about their environmental impact, data center operators are taking proactive action to introduce measurable improvements in their energy efficiency. On the one hand, a few operators are enhancing environmental performance by replacing inefficient legacy infrastructure, switching to on-demand energy models, and retiring redundant `zombie' servers to lower unnecessary energy consumption and cost. On the other hand, some are embracing sustainable energy strategies along with digital solutions that match energy usage with 100 percent renewable energy and ultimately operate on 24/7 sustainable energy.Such hybrid distributed energy systems can deliver both AC and DC power, providing options to enhance efficiencies and eventually enabling data centers to operate carbon-free. Renewable assets, fuel cells, and long-duration energy storage systems, including lithium-ion batteries and battery energy storage systems, can further drive sustainable, resilient, and reliable outcomes. In addition to these eco-friendly and sustainable data centers that can assist modern businesses in saving electricity consumption and reducing carbon footprint, the industry is flexing more toward AI, automation, and multi-cloud solutions.Though data centers operate in highly automated environments, these are today equipped with environmental sensors in racks and servers to enable businesses to track every key aspect of their infrastructure utilizing the software. The end-users--looking for self-service offerings to get things done on their terms and timescale--are fueling the momentum of growth in automated services. AI is facilitating this automation by ensuring data center workers get deeply integrated with technology automation to make other's jobs easier contrary to the technology replacing the worker.Another trend gaining popularity today is multi-cloud; that organizations are increasingly adopting either to expand their business operations in the cloud or due to mergers. To improve their credibility in a business environment, companies facing delays and cost hikes often tend to opt for M&A deals. The data center industry is also undergoing a similar trend, where private equity firms are actively pursuing investments in the data center market.Let us know your thoughts!Joe PhillipManaging Editoreditor@cioapplications.comJoe PhillipGraphics & ArtEditorial StaffBen JacksonDaniel HolmesEzra BenjaminCatalina JosephRose DcruzSenior WritersClara MathewLeah JaneRoyce D'SouzaVictor Cruz Disclaimer: *Some of the Insights are based on our interviews with CIOs and CXOs
