APRIL 2019CIOAPPLICATIONS.COM6Building Factories of the FutureManufacturing is changing. The industry is gradually moving from a unified solutions approach toward more modular products and services--with customers and data at the center of all the innovation. Manufacturing companies are undertaking a progressive upgrade of their technologies and processes which can bring them significant business value. The modern manufacturing framework today revolves around the notion of digitalization of everything: new embedded technology, real-time collaboration, mobility, on-the-fly advanced analytics, intelligence, connectivity, and visualization, to create a seamless and agile manufacturing ecosystem. However, to complete this vision, a new level of knowledge is required, for example, people with new technology and data mining skills, combined with learning agility and cross-domain adaptability, who can interact with global customer-supplier communities in different business situations.Additionally, the growing penetration of robotics in manufacturing is greatly contributing to the increase in reshoring. As the adoption of modern robots, equipped with faster processors and connection to the cloud becomes further popularized, manufacturing companies would be able to automate many of the processes that required a human even just a few years ago. That said, on-demand manufacturing--largely aided by advancements in 3D printing--is drastically changing some businesses. For instance, if a washing machine part breaks, instead of finding a replacement part online and ordering it, a customer can now simply print out a barcode, take it to a local store, and have the part 3D printed there. Or better yet, it could be delivered to the person's address via a drone. That is where the future of manufacturing is heading. In this edition, we present to you companies that are at the leading edge of leveraging digital innovations to bring greater benefits to manufacturing companies across the globe.
