In the world of enterprises, distributed computing was meant for associating various steps in business processes at the most efficient places in the network of computers. In the typical distribution using the 3-tier model, user interface processing is executed in the PC at the user's geographical location, business processing is performed in the remote computer, and the database access and processing are implemented in another computer which provides centralized access for many business processes. Typically, such kind of distributed computing utilises the server communications model.
Nowadays, most of the vendors are discussing 5G networks, and one of the most consistent and regular messages is, these mostly brand new, multi-billion-dollar, and mega-datacenters are soon to be obsolete. This is because 5G demands data again for being decentralized. The issue with the 5G network is that it promises for impressively low latency and high data costs. The existing network that the 5G devices which are now connected to was not designed for the massive increase in bidirectional data traffic or for assuring the low latency promise that 5G provides. For this reason, the data centers should again have to be decentralized so their performance won’t get bottlenecked–and the promised data performance improvements can be realized and achieved.
The IT pendulum is again in motion, as they shift away from cloud computing towards a more distributed computing model. According to reports from Gartner, by 2022, about 75 percent of enterprise generated data will be developed and processed outside of the data center or cloud. Such movement is driven by vast amounts of data from IoT and other digital applications which are now measured in petabytes—that dwarf all earlier networking demands.
As per the requirements for real-time communication flows throughout and beyond Internet of Things, 5G, and AI apps, it’s very transparent that cloud-only approaches can no longer keep up with the required volume, security, privacy, and network bandwidth challenges.
Within a short time, 5G will transform into a blended distributed computing model along with enhanced complexity but with far higher potential performance. This requires to rethink how the networks can be developed and how can they be managed. And It also requires a massive shift of existing resources mitigated somewhat by enhanced dynamic load balancing tools. Simply, it is a long way to say that the technology markets are about to become a lot more lucrative, but only for those enterprises who understand thoroughly and can prepare for the upcoming changes.
